Wilma Sütö, Curator Modern and Contemporary Arts, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam: "The sculptor and tent-builder Dré Wapenaar works at the interface of architecture, design and visual art. He makes tents that function as a birdhouse, tree hut or hangout, while remaining suggestive sculptures, as enigmatic as the light that filters through the multi-hued canvas. Sometimes these mobile structures have a public function, occasionally a very private one. The Birthing Tent and the Death Bivouac, for example, are intimate capsules for the rituals of life and death. In his latest work, too, Wapenaar again reaches out to the cycle of life, seeking equilibrium between the material and the spiritual. His Pavilion of Emptiness and Lumberjack’s Pavilion are storage areas for mental versus physical energy. One is full of wood blocks and equipped with a hearth and a wood-chopping area. An axe is ready for the next blow. The other one is a transparent temple-like construction through which a fresh breeze blows, a zone of reflection for the public." |
